Designed by Louis Schmeisser, the pistol was named for Nikolaus von Dreyse, inventor of the needle gun many years before. Manufactured from 1907 until 1915 by Rheinische Metallwaaren und Maschinenfabrik, Sommerda, Germany. The pistol is beautifully machined, bearing a resemblance to the 1900 Browning, it is striker fired with an unusually complicated trigger mechanism. Loading of the recoil spring takes place above the barrel, grasping surfaces are milled on the forward position of the slide. Made for the civilian, military and police markets. Over 250,000 were manufactured.
